I hear it all the time…..”Should I start a computer repair business?”….Very good question and extremely hard to answer. Some of the questions you have to ask yourself are:

Do I like a steady paycheck?
Do I like vacation time yearly?
Do I like having sick days?
Do I like my weekends free?
Do I like not having a 401K plan?
Do I like the cost of insurance for my family?
Am I an outstanding tech?
Am I a good business person?

Now, those are just a few of the questions you have to ask yourself before you can really decide. One of the biggest complaints is “I am tired of working for the man”….Well sometimes the grass is not always greener on the other side….Maybe looking at employment elsewhere is a better choice than starting your own business. Maybe there are actually things you can do to improve yourself such as certifications, schooling, etc that would be beneficial to yourself and the company you are working for.

Don’t get me wrong owning your own business is great and I for one thoroughly enjoy it. But, don’t be blinded going in thinking things are going to be great from day one because typically they are not. If you have a family you better discuss this with them over and over and over again and who knows maybe they will come up with reasons to start your business or not to start the business.

Bottom line is there is no real easy answer to this question. You just have to put a lot of thought into it and then make the decision.

Ideally you’ll want to start a business before you start a family. It’s just easier and less risky that way. I also suggest starting the business part time while you still have a day job. That also reduces many of the risks and allows you to save enough money to avoid a lot of the issues you raised in this blog post. It’s definitely a big move and not for everyone.

Starting a tech support business was a natural “next step” for me and my family. It was tough at first as nobody wants to pay for your services if you are unknown and new. The reputation you get when you professionally communicate with your clients goes a long, long way! How you deal with them will sometimes outweigh what you did for them technically. I was fortunate to be in a household with another income, so the burden of no cash coming in wasn’t too bad. I suggest using social media and friends to network your client base. It will take a long time to get a steady cash flow, but one day you will look back and realize it was all worth it! http://www.kc-metrotech.com Serving Kansas City and surrounding metro area.

Sometimes the best way is to start it as a hobby. That is what I have done. I repair PCs and Laptops in my spare time whilst holding down a full time job. Starting a full business can be very very rewarding, but I prefer to keep my laptop repair business as an extra income stream.

Just starting out with my IT business based in York, UK. I know I have the tech skills, but we’ll have to see about the business stuff! I guss we’ll find out in about 12 months time…

I have been working as systems administrator in a big company, it felt like the right decision to stay with the big company because of all that mentioned stuff – vacations, sick leaves, paycheck etc.. But in once nice day Wallstreet guys made things worse, much worse, we all know that, and all that stability vanished instantly. Anyway, the point is – you are taking risks anyway, you are a disposable item for the company and there is not much you can do about it. Unless youre in top management. If working for yourself you are taking bigger risks, but also you get bigger rewards, if you really push yourself. Remember, efforts get rewarded always, its the more the effort the more reward. Of course not always this can be measured in money, it could be something equally important, like unvaluable experience, great contacts, etc..

I agree with the post, its not always better when youre the boss, it has its perks, but it has its downsides as well. I have to say the extra stress has been worth it for me so far to be self employed in the computer repair field.

When starting a computer repair business it is important to keep in mind that it might be a long slow work to get enough business to support.
I run a computer repair business and I’ve talked with lots of computer repair business owners.
I’d guess that it takes 2 years on -average- to get to the point they need/want to be to minimally support themselves. Some people get there quicker and sadly some never get revenue up to supporting themselves. But on -average- I would say it is 2 years. You’ll have revenue along the way of course. But you need to be prepared because it can take a long time.

The key is to be 100% committed, if you work hard and keep gaining those contacts you will succeed, thats not to say there is a bit of luck involved.

You also need your spouse to be behind you, as satarting any sort of new business requires a lot of hours and blood and sweat.

Rollercoaster comes to mind, but if you roll with the punches you will reap the benefits, maybe not in the first few years but you will reap the benefit.

I started in My back room at home, in January of this year and now have a small retail shop and 3 employees.

I started a computer repair business quite a while back maybe on you should of called it computer and laptop reapair. There’s not that many computers out there these days everyone is going to laptops and that is starting to die a little now as well What i would strongly recommend is you do a plan or a business model where your going to get income what will you do if you get 40 laptops in all at the same time. Look very strongly to where you are going to expand think about ipods mobiles so you have money coming in all the time.
