This is actually a local story I am going to be following about a server that supports Virginia state agencies and how it crashed. The interesting part is not as much that the server crashed but paying around $250K for an independent review as to why it crashed.

I guess on a 2.4 Billion dollar contract paying a mere $250K for a review is not a bad thing to apease the customer. But, seriously what exactly are they going to review that could take that amount of time and money?

This is just another example of how the state government spends way too much money and the companies that rip them off. I can absolutely justify spending money to look into why a production server crashed to avoid problems in the future. I’m sure the 250k pales in comparison to the amount of money and time they lost when the system was down. However, unless the company doing the investigation has Microsoft Certified Masters, I can’t imagine how it could end up costing 250k.

Similar thing just happened in Louisiana. The Civil Clerk of Court Office which handles all real estate filing had their system crash and they are at least 3 weeks behind on filings. They actually did have a backup but that either wasn’t setup properly or also crashed(?). Craziness.
