Had a customer call me the other day it seemed their computer had a Trojan Virus on it. Not too out of the norm. But, the person had recently (about 2 months earlier) purchased a copy of Norton 360. So in the customers mind they were protected. Norton did catch the Trojan and even said it could not fix it but all you had to do is download this other program they have and it would take care of it.
So after the customer downloaded it and let it run for about an hour it returned a message saying it could not remove the Trojan. Now the customers mind it should of worked so they called Norton (an ordeal in itself) and after hours of being on the phone was told “For $100 we can connect and do it for you”. Their response was why would I pay you $100 when I just purchased your program. The reply was “sometimes the fix works and other times is just won’t work and we have to do it manually”…..On every level this is crazy……
Needless to say the customer was not going to pay them another $100 hence the phone call to me. Went there and took about 30 minutes and got it taken care of.
Just another reason that I am not all too keen on Symantec products.

That’s crazy…I’m glad they didn’t decide to fork of over the $100

Hi,
I have that experience a lot with Symantec products. Very often the virus repairs I am called out on are for computers with fully updated versions of a Norton Anti-Virus software. I always recommend a different product for my customers. Good Post

Yeah symantec is a terrible product that just mass markets its products – I prefer esod or AVG Free (if you are on a budget). What anti-virus do you suggest Dan?

Hi,
Of all my customers with Norton 360 or other Symantec product installed on their PC, there was ALWAYS an issue. And everytime I removed the software and installed the free AVG one. This is one of the best free anit-virus software available. I recommend to all my customers who want good security buy without losing money. Great post.

I never advise any of our customer to use Norton 360 software. We see customers on a daily basis that have this software installed and up to date yet their computers are completely infected with malicious software. Not to mention the program is an enormous power hog that slows almost any computer to a crawl. I still think a basic anti-virus program without all the extra junk they package is the way to go. That along with MalwareBytes seems to be the most effective combination right now.

That’s right symantec is a terrible product that just mass markets its products – I prefer Comodo (if you are on a budget). What anti-virus do you suggest Dan?
