How many other business owners do you know that just say things like “word of mouth”? That is the answer they give for “What kind of advertising do you do?”…In reality I find that very difficult to believe or at least believe it to an extent that they never had to do anything else in order to make their business successful. Now if all they are doing is removing a virus here and there then great, but that’s not really a market that I care to base my business model off of.
In the technology industry you have to stay up on the latest trends and be able to implement them into your business model. Well the same goes with advertising your business in your community. Back in the day who would of thought the internet would turn into a marketing free haven for anyone to advertise their services. Well, now it’s turned into exactly that. How many businesses do you know that don’t have a website and don’t advertise on the Internet?
In my eyes you need to utilize the internet and technology to maximize your advertising and take full advantage of it. Things that fall in this arena are:
- Website
- Mobile Websites
- SMS Advertising
- Phone App
On top of these things you can do things like blog posting and if you don’t have a blog request to write for others. The advantage of that is you can put your signature, your business name, your url in each post you do. It’s just another way to advertise your business and showcase your knowledge.
Each and every year new technology is coming about that affords you a way to advertise your services to others. Don’t be left behind thinking something is not going to work or assuming that “word of mouth” is all you need.

Dan, with little phone programming knowledge, how to you suggest that one goes about creating a customer phone app?
I can design websites all day but have never make much of an attempt at creating a custom phone app.

I’ve been trying to find time to do a phone app for my personal business. Is there any place that someone can direct me to help me getting started with a solid app? I’ve pretty much done everything else with marketing.

You need to spend a bit of time each week checking out the competition on the web, making sure that your website is ranking highly, and checking out your AdWords campaigns.
I also spend a coupla minutes each morning checking my Google Analytics, AdWords, Webmaster and Local Business stats for any sudden changes so that I’m not caught on the hop.
