Home Networking Made Easy
If anyone wanted to build, their own home network a decade ago, individuals would have said that he is an incurable computer geek, but with all the advantages offered nowadays for a home network, it should rather be “Why not?” Many people when asked will admit that they have more than one computer in their home. Sometimes it is both the parents that have computers and laptops or both and the kids often have their own desktops and notebooks as well.
A home network will allow so much for the little bit of time and effort used to install it that it will be beyond comparison. A computer in an upstairs bedroom will for instance be able to print to a printer, which may be downstairs in the study. A media computer in your living area can be used to show a movie on a computer connected TV in your own bedroom. If you would like to see what is going on at home while you are at work, you can set up your Webcam with the use of a home network.
Sharing High-speed Internet
The home network will allow you to link all the computers in your house and all could share the same high-speed Internet access. Ther is no more need to share you computer with someone else and the great advantage is the fact that everyone on your home network will be able to browse the Web at the same time.
Control over kids
With a home network, you will be able to control what your kids are doing on the internet allowing you to teach them to use the Web properly. It will give you control as you can block complete access to potentially unsafe as well as inappropriate contents on the Web. You can have control over the search engines as well as list creation where you can block some sites completely if needed.
Sharing of Data, Files and Printer
You will be able to share multi-media files and data across the computers in your home. It will give you a lot more flexibility than when you have to use Zip drives or floppy disks. You can set up your network to allow all the computers to share one printer, Webcam, network scanner or CD burners, which is a great cost saver as well.
Backup
A home network will also allow you automated backup for the computers in your home. Reducing the cost and complexity of protecting, managing, archiving, recovering and migrating data in the different computers and notebooks.
Shared Network Hard Disk
Is a super feature which allows the creation of shared folders for all the members of the family and they will be able to access it from your home network or the Internet when they or you are not home. All your backup files can also be stored. You will be able to set preferences, which will allow either full access or partial access to younger members of the family.

What a great post. I have clients ask me all the time what the point of setting up a network is, and this post boiled it down wonderfully!

I couldn’t agree more. A fast home network can add so much to a house/work place. I even help install networked televisions so you can store all your pictures/films on your computer and watch them on your TV.

The importance of a home network is increasing. As it is both easy to use and cheaper than having more than one printer in everyone in a house. This is networking at it basic level but I have seen requests increased for home network kits.

I would like to suggest you also build your own custom firewall. For me, it was a great learning experience, and even better, has proven to be quite fun.
Another plus is that after mastering the creation of my own firewall (I used IPCop, but there are various open source and free software options available that allow you to use old equipment), I can offer it as a service to my customers.

i agree: Great post.
One thing that is missing is the possibility of streaming media… I enjoy using our home network to push SageTV stuff around our home. Couldn’t do it without a properly setup network!
