Am going to be doing a website for a business and they had the Domain registered through Network Solutions. They did not personally register it they had the person that was going to build the site awhile ago register it for them. Well now the time comes I need access to change the name servers and low and behold he can’t access the site to change things. Few e-mails go back and forth and the answer ends up being “I will not transfer the domain, you will have to contact Network Solutions“.
Now this is crazy on a few levels. First, when the domain was first registered it should of been done in the name of the owner of the business. They should of had records showing the registration, access information, etc. But, I have found in this business quite a few web people for some reason register in their name and put it in their account. To me this is totally unprofessional and the wrong way to go about thing. It actually would not be a bad thing at all if when the time comes the customer wants to do something you help them the way you should.
So now phone calls to Network Solutions a few times to find out their policy on getting this correct. Total ordeal to say the least and on hold for about 45 mintues. That is why I register all my accounts through GoDaddy, I have found their customer support to be superior to others.
Do yourself a favor and your “potential” customers, register their domain of choice in their name. Sit there with them and create them an account and do the whole thing. Then email them the information for their records. That is the right way to do business.

That is bizzar! All of my “Domain Registrar” is locked away by my server provider for security reasons. But, still… its weird!

I have had this happen in the past when taking over accounts from other website designers. As long as the client has no financial obligations to the old web designer the web designer must allow for transfer to take place. The “correct” way to register a domain name for a client is to make them the registrant and your company or yourself the administrative and billing contact if you performing website work for that client. In my experience doing this will eliminate billing and payment issues as well as transferring issues later on. Keep a record on file and copy the client with the activation e-mail. If you are honest and perform good work the client will return to add additional hosting and domain name renewals through you. If they do desire to change web designers this is a good opportunity to speak with them about their decision to leave.
