Read a post about this and thought it was pretty interesting.  Here you have a business that maps out wi-fi spots in an area and calls it “Wi-Fi Mapper“.

Now the owner Tim Groninga of Cedar Valley Tech actually refers to it as “raising awareness of wireless network security and for research puposes” and then continues to say “information is processed and turned into this fun map”. Now when I look at the map what I see are wireless networks that are secure and some that are not. I also see some that it’s possible refer to the person’s last name as their SSID on the router. On top of that I see locations on a map i.e. street where these networks are.

Now I am wondering where exactly is the “fun” part of this? Is the “fun” part when a home owner walks out and sees a vechile in front of their house tapping into their wireless that they have unsecure? Is the fun part looking out the window and maybe seeing a vechile in front of your house and you are not sure why but you do not feel it’s safe to have your children outside?

Maybe i’m missing the “fun”. Maybe Tim Groninga would not mind if random people were outside his house.

Maybe a new idea would be to make a “Who’s Home Is Secured’ and then annotate on it what homeowners actually have security sensors setup and who does not. Maybe it could also be a “fun” thing.

I guess i’m just glad that I don’t live in that area. I for one would not consider it “fun” to have my address mapped out for anyone to see because Tim Groninga things it’s ‘fun”.

    My thoughts exactly.

I couldn’t agree more. I know to secure my networks and recommend that everyone always does, but there are those people who could care less about it.

I’d be pretty hot if I pulled into my drive away and found someone stealing my bandwidth for sure.

I agree the word fun is not a word to describe these kind of situations. It may be a good tool to scare people into getting there networks secured however if people have unsecured networks they probably wont even know about these types of tools.

I agree with you. There is nothing fun about it. That is why I have my WiFi singnal protected with a security lock.
